Transversal and Multicultural Inspirations

Stories Interviews Transversal and Multicultural Inspirations

Michel & Daniel Bismut - "architecture shouldn’t be ephemeral"

What makes your work different? What is your signature style?
A restrained architectural and decorative vocabulary and the interplay of materials, volume and light, which lead to effects that are both subtle and delicate. We are always looking for a balance that does not make us too fashion conscious.

A key object or piece that captures the moment (that you have seen or noticed in the work of an artist or designer that has influenced you)?
One of Antony Gormley’s figurines.

The vintage piece or a historical designer that inspires you?
Several ! Paul Dupré-Lafon and Jean-Michel Frank inspire and influence our work. In terms of art, we are Picasso lovers.

In which design category would you place yourself?
Well of course not with the Neo Classicals but most of all we do not want to be defined… our inspiration sources are transversal and multicultural.

Which countries and cultures inspire your work?
Everything… our mother is Italian, our father is Tunisian and one of our grandmothers, French! Sidi Bou Said is definitely a place that inspires us.

Favourite object or piece you have designed?
The stainless steel bench !

The secret to interior decoration?
The right dosage. What we hope is that our work will not age.

What does it mean to be French in the world of Interior Design and Architecture?
We are lucky in France to be the ambassadors of ‘good taste’, so very often people come to us looking for a piece of France.

Your most suitable pairings for a space?
Mixing “hot and cold” materials.

Interior Designer or Architect?
Often, the key to decoration is that it should be ephemeral and follow fashion. In fact, this doesn’t exist and cannot survive without quality architecture. The concept of “decoration” is nevertheless essential because it gives a place its identity, which must always be in harmony with its occupants.

Which quality is essential for a piece of furniture?
Its function!

The current trends that you like to follow?
We try to stay away from trends. Architecture shouldn’t be ephemeral.

Minimalist or Baroque?
A touch of Baroque is often essential.

Which design style do you prefer? The most creative era?
Even though our sources of inspiration are always transversal, we are not interested in reproducing a style. Instead, we are looking to the future. The 15th and 16th centuries were incredibly sumptuous periods.

What should we look for in a luxury piece of furniture or a piece of art furniture?
It should both surprise us whilst perfectly blending in with its surroundings.

What is the sign that shows that a piece is most certainly French?
The know-how and expertise of its makers.

A dream project that you hope to design one day?
A hotel that is truly new… different. The character and passion of a client are essential to see through a project like that.

What do you think of The Invisible Collection website?
An incredible idea with a new angle.

Bismut & Bismut

Brothers, architects and designers, the duo have always followed their taste for clean lines, which emphasises light and perspective. From visual identities to interior design and furniture design, they have a cross-disciplinary approach. Their signature materials – Stucco, glass, wood – give a jewel box quality to everything they touch. From the conception of a building to the detail of a door handle or a piece of furniture, they revisit the classics, without dismissing the object’s story, whilst continuing to project a contemporary vision.
