Cristina Celestino needs no introduction: since the launch of her furniture brand Attico Design, the Italian architect has been on everyone’s radar. Not just for having won many prizes, but for her unsurpassed style in creating the most striking, unforgettable décors.
Cristina sees herself as a “curious objects investigator”, as her work is based on observation and research. Playing with scale, proportions, colors and textures, her style is a well balanced mix of many inspirations borrowed from the collective imaginary, popular culture, shapes found in nature… All these elements come together in a harmonious yet rigorous display, often unexpected and ironic.
To mark her collaboration with The Invisible Collection, Cristina presents “Mirage”, a stunning three-panel screen that she created for her special project Caffè Concerto Cucchi during last year’s edition of Milano Design Week
Tapping into the tradition of café chantant – a type of cabaret-like establishment that became fashionable during the Belle Époque – Cristina decorated the famous Caffé Pasticceria Cucchi in Milano with her unique style. By creating a surreal landscape of geometrical patterns and botanical elements on hand-painted silk wallpaper, Cristina conjured a dreamy atmosphere that she called Oasi, a beautiful, timeless oasis. The Mirage fold screen is one of the décors’ key elements. Made of precious inlays of straw in different chromatic nuances that match the color palette of the surrounding walls, the screen recalls a mirage in an oneiric landscape, highlighted by a set of ruby red vertical bands. A great admirer of Lison de Caune’s work, Cristina conceived Mirage as a means to collaborating with the famed straw marquetry artisan, who was thrilled to make this one-of-a-kind piece.
