In the heart of Charente, in the middle of a rolling countryside of an almost English green, stands imperious the Domaine des Etangs, a historic chateau turned into an über-lavish resort. Thousands of acres of bucolic peace, graced by an XI century castle with its towers, its water mill, its cottages, its groves and woods, its impeccably designed gardens and – as the name suggests, étang being the French word for pond – a vast pond, where one is invited to take a boat trip or just relax into a Zen moment of contemplation…
We immediately fell in love with this place, the family mansion of the Primat-Schlumberger dynasty – restored and transformed into a luxurious resort by Garance Primat. The refurbishing lasted more than five years and the result is breathtaking, so much the overall beauty is sublimated by the attention to every detail. The interior design is the work of renowned architect Isabelle Stanislas, who, while keeping intact the original elements, was able to bring out an ultra-contemporary feel. The guests circulate from one room to the other with the feeling of discovering a new dimension of elegant and discreet luxury, each room with its unique décor and contemporary artworks, up to the vast attic transformed into a playroom.
The beautiful rooms and suites, the stunning library, the smoking room, the restaurant run by a chef who cooks the produce grown in the organic vegetable garden, the heated swimming pool, the hammam, the gardens designed by landscape architect Camille Muller and lit by the brilliant light artist Yann Kersalé (who works regularly with Jean Nouvel): everything is designed to turn your stay into a heavenly experience.
