Whenever we admire beautiful marble designs, we are reminded of Michelangelo’s famous quote: “The sculpture is already complete in the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.” The Italian master was simply saying that he was freeing the forms imprisoned in the marble, forms that he alone could see inside the piece of stone, adding: “a man paints with his brains and not with his hands.”
Since ancient Greece, marble has been the material of choice for the most breathtaking monuments and artworks, inspiring architects and artists with its uncommon, fascinating beauty. Centuries later, the fascination with this luxurious stone has not waned in the least, and now, most interior decorators, architects and designers find within the marble block new shapes, waiting to be set free…
We looked into the work of our designers, and selected some pieces that resonate with Michelangelo’s words. Most of them find the material in the same Italian quarries that were regularly visited by the great masters of the past. Besides the luxurious Carrara marble –white, with natural-toned or coloured veining- there are other types of marble, with a colour base that can vary from deep black to emerald green or lavish pink.
The colour and veining intensity are unique to each marble block thus creating one-of-a-kind patterns for each design.
