WHEN IN MILAN….
The Invisible Collectionista must-dos during il Salone del Mobile
It’s that time of the year when anyone who’s anyone in the world of design heads to Milano: bookings are made, meetings are set, and luggage is packed. Here are a few vital suggestions to enjoy (and survive) the five-day design-fest:
First apologize to your liver and then just enjoy the unsurpassed variety of aperitivi shaken and stirred everywhere in the city. Forget not: Milano is the spiritual capital of a very special approach to cocktails. With that in mind, it’s with the attitude of the devoted pilgrim visiting a holy site that we will go to Bar Bassoand ask for a Negroni Sbagliato. This bar has been serving cocktails since 1947, and now proudly offers a selection of 500 – repeat five hundred! – highly creative drinks. The other bar we want to try is the brand new Cracco in Galleria: renowned chef Carlo Cracco has renovated an entire building inside the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with a different venue on each floor. If you’re lucky, after an aperitivo downstairs, you might even get a table at the restaurant on the first floor, or enjoy some wine tasting in their fantastic wine cellar. If that fails, just head to Dry, the best spot for cocktails & pizza.
Detox or not Detox?
Your liver did not accept the apologies… switch to plan B and get into detox-mode. Every joint in the city is now offering a healthy choice of drinks. We like V3Rawand its variety of cold pressed juices, and we like even better VitaminChic, kale juice kingdom! The bad news is they close at 6pm; the good news is that it leaves you enough time to get to Bar Bassofor the 7pm aperitivo.
Apologize – again! – to your liver, and indulge yourself in some traditional cuisine: Risotto allo zafferano, Cotoletta alla Milanese, Ossobuco… in other words: everything that screams calories. Still, it’s delicious and irresistible. For those who love meat the go-to place is La Cantinetta, a very traditional trattoria who serves the best tagliata in town. We can’t resist checking out the brand new Aimo and Nadia BistRo: in the kitchen two stellar chefs, in the main room wallpaper and tapestry designed by Etro complimenting a selection of vintage furniture. If you are too busy and don’t want to sit down you can still get some delicious food at EAT Urban FoodTruck Festival, the real culinary experience during Salone…
Proud to be designers
Finally, the perfect excuse to sport our beloved Prada platforms! We are joining the Design Pride… yes, right now there are very few things we should be proud of, and design is definitely one of them! Full disclosure, this is only the third edition, and we don’t know how cool this parade in the 5VIE district is going to be. But, when you know that one of the organizers is none other than ToiletPaper’s creative team (Maurizio Cattelan anyone?) we can safely assume we will not regret it. There will be music, dancing and … sashaying! The meeting point is Piazza Castello at 6PM on the 18th.
Don’t stop ‘til you drop….
Can you hear the beat? That’s the sound of the disco queen inside you screaming and stomping to be let out… and out we go: after dark the clubbing starts, with pop-up clubs all over the city…. Too many to mention, but here is the full list…
…and then chill out
Two options to rest your feet: you either drop by Chez Nina, an ephemeral club staged by India Mahdavi inside Nilufar gallery, for a quiet moment of meditation (maybe not that quiet: everybody will be there) or you just go for the exclusive Opera Of The Soulmassage at the spa in the Mandarin Oriental… On second thoughts: why choose when you can have both?
