Background. Daughter of famous painter Balthus and Japanese artist Setsuko Ideta, Harumi Klossowska de Rola, grew up surrounded by art, literally. Since her early years, spent in Villa Medici in Rome, she always loved to express her artistic self. At the age of seven, she saw a collection of precious gems and was so enthralled by it that she decided she wanted to create jewelry. She spent her teens in Switzerland, enjoying horse riding and learning calligraphy, living in the amazing Grand Chalet de Rossinière, an 18thcentury mansion built to stock … Swiss cheese in its cellars. After a few years spent working with John Galliano, Harumi started creating her first line of jewelry, loosely inspired by a collection of oriental buttons and ribbons her mother kept in a drawer. In 2008, she created her first pieces of haute joillerie, a commission by Boucheron to celebrate the brand’s 150thanniversary. This first collection sets the beginning of a new path, as Harumi starts experimenting with precious metals and gems.
Signature Style. The natural world with its flora, fauna and some fascinating beasts, has always been a recurring theme and source of inspiration in Harumi’s work. Snakes and lions, dragons and panthers, hawks’ heads and fish tails, become precious necklaces and bracelets, elaborated rings and hairpins… All her creations are a homage to the hidden beauty of fragility, and a celebration of very bold aesthetics. Through the years, she has developed a very personal conceptual approach in her design, striving to create objects that can have a dual function, both a piece of jewelry and a sculpture, “something that you can wear, or you can exhibit on a shelf”.
Showstoppers. Harumi regularly collaborates with all the great luxury brands, Boucheron, Chopard, Van Cleef & Arpels, Valentino, Chanel, … creating for each one a very personal unique collection. We love the delicate headpieces –shaped as a coiled snake- she created for the 2016 Valentino S/S Haute Couture collection.
What’s Up. An original capsule collection of six decorative objects and six matching jewels created in collaboration with the French jeweler Goossens, sold exclusively on The Invisible Collection. Inspired by the natural shapes found in nature, the collection is a homage to the pomegranate – symbol of resurrection and fertility- , the fig leaf – generosity –, and the mistletoe – immortality and prosperity.
